The Oak Drawing Room
The Oak Drawing Room at Mawley is lined with finely carved and ornate oak paneling, derived from the work of Grinling Gibbons. Fluted pilasters, fruit infested capitals and elaborate picture frames ensure that The Oak Drawing Room is no less ornate and rich in detail than The Hall.
The ceiling of The Oak Drawing Room is a fresco, painted by Graham Rust in 1978. The theme is Paradise Regained, after the poem by John Milton. The Tree of Life (opposite) is represented in this ceiling by a lushly growing hybrid banana palm. The cherubs hold garlands of flowers which are species grown on the Mawley estate. The botanical details signify the family’s keen interest in the restoration of the gardens and increasing the stock of plants.
